CORE LIBRARY REPORT
Young men and boys are particularly likely to belong to extremist movements. This is often allied with misogynist and anti-feminist attitudes, which are most clearly found in the so-called ‘incel’ subculture. Some radical subcultures adopt an exaggerated, assertive masculinity, such as the ‘Proud Boys’. This report explores the connections between masculinity – the behaviours, attitudes and appearance associated with maleness – and extremism. It argues that there is a need to take a critical look at masculinity in order to reduce men and boys’ vulnerability to extremism.
