Mobashra Tazamal is the Associate Director of the Bridge Initiative at Georgetown University. She focuses upon Islamophobia from a global dimension, looking at state-level discrimination against Muslims in China, India and Myanmar. She describes these as genocidal campaigns against the Uyhgur and Rohingya, and argues that Narendra Modi’s India could be considered to be at the same level. She describes each case individually, from Myanmar where Muslims are positioned as a threat to the Buddhist minority to Chinese’s ‘One Nation’ policies which target Uyghur Muslims. She outlines the various communal tensions in India and the origins of the Hindutva movement, and inaction from the state in dealing with Hindu violence, with references to Modi’s own political career.
