Surviving a brutal Islamophobic attack

SURVIVOR STORIES: Abdir

Adbir, who immigrated to the USA at a young age, survived a shooting event in which a friend was injured.

Adbir came to the USA from America at the age of six. He quickly became aware of the undercurrent of Islamophobia, which became a tsunami after 9/11, as he felt the change in being treated as an oddity to outright aggression. He describes in detail the trauma of surviving an attack at a gas station, in which an armed man fired bullets at him and two of his friends, injuring one of them severely. Adbir describes the difficulties of coming to terms with his trauma after the attack, and his hopes for a future in which Muslims are fully accepted into American society.
