Young people as counter-extremism innovators

EXPERT: Farah Pandith

Farah Pandith has worked to develop community responses to Islamism amongst young Muslims for the US State. She was born in Kashmir, but moved to the United States as a child, and became a US diplomat.

Farah Pandith has served three American presidents working to develop community responses to Islamism amongst young Muslims. She talks about creating new, long-term models to respond to extremism, and how to develop new solutions. In an increasingly interconnected world, terrorist groups are learning from each other, increasing the threat to democracy. She says that it is important that counter-terrorism work learns from each other, and builds a network for sharing information and techniques to counter-radicalisation. She argues that it’s time for shift in policy towards soft, entrepreneurial power to address the potential of radical movements to influence young people. Farah also advocates for governments to collaborate and learn from each other to develop strategies that work, and identify which organisations are best placed to tackle each individual aspect of combatting radicalisation.
