CORE LIBRARY: Online radicalisation

CORE LIBRARY REPORT

Social media has been identified as a key amplifier of violent extremism. This document summarises the impact of the internet on patterns of radicalisation with a particular focus upon social media, including filter bubbles and echo chambers, the ways in which radicalisation spreads, and cognitive vulnerabilities within online spaces. IT catalyses radicalisation through providing channels of communication that amplify hateful messages and provide spaces to organise. The fifth report analyses these dynamics and the use of information technology in both radicalisation and counter-radicalisation, as well as a short consideration of platform measures and building resilience to radicalisation and media awareness into education measures. Since the internet is now a part of everyday life, this report argues that there is a need for both policy and technology to develop responses to the risks of online radicalisation.
