Responding to tragedy as a victim and a campaigner

SURVIVOR STORIES: Figen Murray

Figen Murray’s son died in the Ariana Grande concert bombing. She is now a campaigner against extremism and for security measures to protect the public.

Figen Murray’s son Martyn was one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing of May 22, 2017, which was carried out by a suicide bomber at an Ariana Grande concert and resulted in the death of 22 people and injuring many others. Figen, a former therapist, describes the impact upon her family, her determination to forgive the attacker, and her work to develop support for those who have lost a loved one due to extremist violence. She also describes her advocacy for increased security measures in public venues and campaigning for ‘Martyn’s Law’ to enhance security in crowded places, such as concert venues and sports arenas, to prevent and respond effectively to potential terrorist threats.
